• Handicap Index = Average of best 2 differentials × 0.96
• Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Target Slope ÷ 113), rounded to nearest whole number

What is Golf Handicap Calculator?

Understanding Golf Handicap System

The Golf Handicap System provides a numerical measure of a golfer's potential scoring ability on a course of standard difficulty. It allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other by adjusting scores based on the relative difficulty of the courses played.

Key Terms

Score Differential

A numerical value that represents the difference between a player's score and the expected score for a scratch golfer on the same course under the same conditions.

Course Rating

The expected score for a scratch golfer (0 handicap) playing the course under normal conditions. Usually close to par but can vary based on course difficulty.

Slope Rating

A measure of the relative difficulty of a course for bogey golfers compared to scratch golfers. Ranges from 55-155, with 113 being standard difficulty.

PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation)

An adjustment for abnormal playing conditions (weather, course setup) that may have affected scoring on a particular day. Ranges from -1 to +3.

Calculation Process

  1. Calculate Score Differential for each round using the formula above
  2. Select the appropriate number of lowest differentials based on total rounds played
  3. Average the selected differentials
  4. Multiply by 0.96 to get the Handicap Index
  5. Calculate Course Handicap by adjusting for the target course's slope rating

Number of Differentials Used

5-6 rounds: Use 2 lowest
7-8 rounds: Use 2 lowest
9-11 rounds: Use 4 lowest
12-15 rounds: Use 5 lowest
16-18 rounds: Use 6 lowest
19 rounds: Use 7 lowest
20+ rounds: Use 8 lowest

Using Your Handicap

  • Tournament Play: Use Course Handicap adjusted for the specific tees and course
  • Match Play: Take difference between handicaps for stroke allocation
  • Net Scoring: Subtract Course Handicap from gross score for net score
  • Different Courses: Recalculate Course Handicap for each different course

FAQ - Golf Handicap Calculator

You need a minimum of 5 rounds to establish an official handicap index. However, the more rounds you have (up to 20), the more accurate your handicap becomes. The system uses your best differentials, so more rounds provide a better sample of your potential scoring ability.
